スタンド前からの発走となり、最初のコーナーまでの距離は３９７ｍと短くも長くもない。１コーナーまでには各馬の位置取りがスムーズに決まることが多く、コーナーを２つ回って、向こう正面にかけて比較的穏やかにレースが進む。かと思えば、前半から飛ばす馬がいて意外に前半のペースが速くなったりするため、折り合いの難しい馬や器用に立ち回ることの出来ない馬にとっては、勝ち切ることが難しいコースである。

道中がスローの団子状態で流れた場合、外々を回されてしまうと、かなりの距離ロスになってしまう。外を回されやすい外枠よりも、経済コースを進むことができる内枠を引いた馬の方が有利になる。

外回りコースでは、４コーナーの出口で内回りコースと合流するため内柵がなくなり、内にポッカリとスペースができる。そのため、内埒沿いを走っていても前が詰まることが少なく、脚さえ残っていれば確実に馬群を割ることができる。よって、脚を余して負けるということが極めて少ない、実力が正直に反映されるコース設定となっている。
